Cowboy Country

I have just spent a week in Wyoming, America's least populated state. A state known for the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, the Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks where Ansel Adams made his famous picture of Snake River, and of course its Wildlife; Bison, Bear, Beaver, and Badger all roam the state. Located in the heart of the Wild West, Wyoming is famously the Cowboy State of America.

The town of Cody, founded by and named after William "Buffalo Bill" Cody is home to nightly rodeos throughout the summer.

Ragged Old Flag

Everywhere you drive in this country you encounter houses and cars adorned with pristine flags. People here just love to have old glory waving out on their front porch or off the back of their vehicle. I have been looking for a tattered flag and it has taken me most of my trip to find one! This star spangled banner was raised next to the gate of a rural property on a highway somewhere near the Utah-Arizona border.

Looking at rocks...

I spent the last few days driving through the Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, and The Grand Canyon looking at some incredibly impressive rocks!

This area was extensively documented by Ansel Adams and I couldn't stop thinking about all his fantastic imagery as I was approaching these landscapes, hoping that they would live up to the expectations I had after seeing his images. Luckily I was surprised, all the landscapes. I had found somewhere that no picture can possibly do justice!

Gone Fishin'

When I arrived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Sunday I was confronted not only with a dull overcast day but with very little to photograph, downtown was boring, and pretty much everywhere else was either deserted or too rough to even think about getting out of the car.

Just as I was about to head back to my accommodation the sun emerged through the clouds so I went off to just about the only place I thought I could possibly make a decent picture, the old bridge over the Mississippi. As I walked along the top of the levee I came across Donald and a few of his friends fishing down by the river. While I was there nothing decent was caught but they were optimistic that after dark was the best time to catch some quality catfish.

Roaming the Natchez Trace

As I drove down a quiet stretch of the Natchez Trace Parkway towards Natchez Mississippi I came across these 3 local boys walking down the middle of the road. I quickly pulled to the side of the road for a chat and to make a portrait, they were apparently off to explore another section of the original Old Natchez Trace, a 444 miles historic pathway between Natchez Mississippi and Nashville Tennessee used by Native Americans as well as European and American explorers, traders, and emigrants.

Over 2000 Clicks In

Over the past 4 days I have driven just over 1,300 miles (~2000km) through 9 states. It will be the most intense days of driving on my trip, from this point forward I will only travel around 150 miles or less each day.

I don't have the time right now to write a detailed caption or story line for the image tonight however I will leave you with basic caption details below and leave the rest up to your imagination.

On The Road Again...

...Goin' places that I've never been,
Seein' things that I may never see again...

Well now that you all have that song stuck in your head, I will begin with my first post related to the 72 day long road trip I began today. At 10am I set off from New York City and while motoring through a torrential downpour with the sole intention of getting as far from New York as possible, I made it to Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The weather is due to fine up over the coming days and I look forward to making regular updates of my travels.

Wild Winds Whip Illawarra

I woke this morning to news that the storm which hit Sydney overnight had caused devastation to Kiami, a suburb of the Illawarra region 2 hours drive south of Sydney. I instantly jumped in the car and made my way south.

The first thing I saw on the way in to town was the fire station which had been literally torn in half by the wild storm. Many houses had severe damage to their roofs whilst a handful of houses where missing roofs or entire levels.

From all reports I heard of the ferocity of the storm it is amazing that no one was killed or critically injured!

I miss New York!

Apologies for the lack of updates, I knew I could never keep a New Years Resolution! The reason for the inactivity is because much of what I have been shooting lately has been work related and as it is yet to be published in print I cannot share it here... Stay tuned for that soon!

As I have been working to save up for my move to New York I can't help but count down the days, all 113 of them!

Anyway I will leave you with just a couple my images from my last visit to my favourite city... I will leave it up to your imagination as to where that may be!

Congratulations Mr President

Yesterday I bore witness to a piece of history, the second inauguration of Barack H. Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. It was one of those "once in a lifetime" kind of moments.

As I was not credentialed or assigned to cover the event I decided to sit this one out in the public areas and rather than witnessing the entire day through my lens I chose to spend much of the day simply soaking up the atmosphere. I shot only a few hundred frames the entire day, many of them "spray and pray" style over the heads of the crowds in front of me!

Now that I am beginning my travels back to Australia I decided that my few hours at JFK would be the perfect opportunity to sort through and share just a small handful of images from yesterday. Expect more in the coming days or weeks.

Enjoy!

Empire State of Mind

One of my favourite views of New York is from the 'The Top of The Rock', the observation deck on top of the Rockefeller Centre. I spent nearly an entire day up here last winter and when the skies were nice recently I couldn't help myself and just had to go back up!

Happy New Year!!

What better time to get back in to the weekly blogging again than on the first Sunday of the year?
After a very busy few months towards the end of 2012 spent finishing university, helping to organise our graduate exhibition, and graduating I am now free and ready to get back in to the organised flow of weekly blog updates.

I hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic Festive Season and a wonderful New Year. I was lucky enough to spend New Years Eve roaming about in New York's Times Square from about 8pm-1am. Whilst I can say it is not something I think I ever intend to do again it was an amazing experience and truly unforgettable, once in a lifetime kind of moment.

I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed taking them and I look forward to bringing my work to your screens every week this year!
